SEMAFO Inc. (TSX, OMX: SMF) deeply regrets to announce that on November 6, 2019, an armed attack occurred on a convoy traveling on the public road between Fada N’Gourma and the Boungou mine site in the Est Region of Burkina Faso. The incident took place approximately 40 kilometers from the mine and targeted five buses carrying SEMAFO employees, contractors, and suppliers under military escort.
According to initial reports from local authorities, 37 people were killed and over 60 others injured. The final toll may evolve as investigations continue. The company is working closely with the Burkinabe government and security forces to confirm details and support the victims, survivors, and their families.
Statement from SEMAFO Leadership
“We are devastated by this horrific and unprecedented attack,” said Benoit Desormeaux, President and CEO of SEMAFO. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and colleagues of those affected. Our immediate priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees and partners. This tragedy has deeply affected everyone in the SEMAFO community.”
The Boungou mine site itself remains secure. However, as a precautionary measure and out of respect for the victims, SEMAFO has temporarily suspended operations in the area. The company is maintaining close coordination with local authorities and military officials to review and strengthen security measures across all logistics routes and facilities.
Details of the Incident
The convoy, which included buses and supply trucks, was ambushed on the main road linking Fada to Boungou—a route previously cleared for use by security forces. Reports indicate that the attack began when an explosive device struck one of the lead military vehicles, followed by heavy gunfire directed at the buses carrying workers.
The assault occurred in an area with limited communication infrastructure, which initially delayed response and rescue efforts. Many of those killed or injured were local employees and contractors traveling to the mine for shift rotations. No group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, though the region has faced growing instability and violence from armed extremist groups in recent years.
The attack represents one of the deadliest incidents against a mining convoy in Burkina Faso’s history, underscoring the deteriorating security environment in the country’s eastern and northern regions.
Response and Support Efforts
SEMAFO has mobilized crisis management teams both in Burkina Faso and Canada to provide assistance and coordinate next steps. Immediate measures include:
-
Victim and Family Support: Providing medical care, counseling, and financial assistance to survivors and the families of those killed or injured.
-
Security Reinforcement: Working closely with the Burkinabe military to enhance protection for all travel routes and site facilities.
-
Operational Review: Conducting a full reassessment of transportation protocols and emergency procedures to prevent further tragedies.
-
Investigation Collaboration: Cooperating fully with national authorities to determine responsibility for the attack and bring perpetrators to justice.
Mr. Desormeaux emphasized that SEMAFO remains committed to the people of Burkina Faso, stating, “We will not turn away from our responsibilities or the communities that depend on our presence. But we will not compromise on safety. Every possible measure will be taken to protect our people.”
Background and Context
This was not the first security challenge faced by SEMAFO in the region. In 2018 and early 2019, the company had already experienced smaller-scale attacks on convoys and had taken steps to increase military escorts, restrict travel times, and utilize air transport for expatriate staff. Despite these precautions, the deteriorating situation in eastern Burkina Faso has made mining operations increasingly difficult.
The Est Region, once considered relatively stable, has become a target for armed groups seeking to disrupt government and economic activity. Mining operations, due to their logistical routes and workforce movements, have often been caught in the crossfire.
